US Congressman, US Senator, Alabama Governor. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, he read law and was admitted to the Bar Association in 1810. He practiced in the Mississippi and Alabama Territories, and was elected to the Alabama Territorial Legislature. He served as Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1817, and was a member of the 1819 Alabama Constitution Convention, participating in the creation of the state's Constitution, a pre-requisite for it's admission into the United States. After Alabama was admitted to the Union he was elected as a Jacksonian At-Large Delegate to represent the state in the United States House of Representatives in 1821, becoming Alabama's second Congressman after Congressman John Crowell. In 1823 he was re-elected, this time representing Alabama's 1st Congressional District, serving until 1829. He then successfully ran for the Governorship of Alabama, and served in that office from 1829 to 1831, when he resigned to run for United States Senator from Alabama. He was subsequently elected to the office, and served as a Senator from 1831 to 1837. A supporter of President Andrew Jackson initially, after becoming a Senator he opposed several measures by President Jackson, which created enmity between the two politicians. President Jackson used his influence against Senator Moore, knowing he would not be re-elected as Senator, declined to run for a second term. In 1836 he attempted to run for his previous House of Representative seat, but was defeated handily. Other attempts to secure political patronage positions failed as well, largely due to the influence of President Jackson's opposition. His fiances were then hit hard by the Panic of 1837, and he eventually removed to Swanson's Landing, Harrison County, Texas, near Caddo Lake, where died in 1844. A historical sign was erected for him in Danbury, North Carolina near where he was born.
