Vernon Maurice "Bubba" Duncan was born on December 7, 1932 in Coahoma, Texas to Willie Orlean "Willene" Slater, 1917-1957 and Vernon Emmett Duncan, 1911-1985. He was the first of two children born to them.

Maurice was reared by the tenets of the Methodist Church, into which he was baptized as an infant and re-dedicated at the age of seven.

His formal education began in the public school system. Maurice attended Coahoma Independent School District from September, 1939 through May, 1951, graduating from CHS in the Spring of 1951. Throughout those years he participated in virtually all extracurricular activities and was voted Senior Class Favorite. He excelled in all sports, especially football. As a Coahoma Bulldog he was named all-district guard for three years and his on-field talent earned him a sports scholarship to New Mexico A&M University in Las Cruces New Mexico. He matriculated there in the fall of 1951 and garnered glowing reviews from local sports commentators throughout his first season. He sustained several serious injuries during that time, one of which was a severe concussion, and he was then denied medical permission to continue on in the program. He transferred to San Angelo Junior College in San Angelo, Texas in 1952 to complete his basic studies.

While attending college in San Angelo, Maurice met and began dating the love of his life, Miss Elna Avis Jameson of Silver, Texas. In San Angelo, Texas on March 4, 1953, he and Elna exchanged marriage vows and entered into a union that lasted 58 years. Elna and their two children, along with four grandchildren and a growing number of great-grandchildren survive him. He is also survived by a sister, a maternal uncle, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large extended family of friends.
