LUCILLE HAMMOND LAWRENCE

Lucille Hammond Lawrence,85, of Roanoke, died on Sunday, July 6, 2003.
Daughter of Cynthia and Grafton Beall Hammond, she was born in Shenandoah, Virginia, on Jan 27, 1918.
At an early age she was interested in dramatics, and at 18 was hiredd by a professional drama company to produce plays in various small towns in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. She later was the drama coach at Shenandoah High School, as well as the secretary to the high school principal.
In 1941, Mrs. Lawrence married Mr. Carl Bennett, also of Shenandoah, Va. Mr. Bennett served in Germany in WWII. They had been married for 13 years when Mr. Bennett was killed in a construction accident in Baltimore.
Mrs. Lawrence was subsequently married to Mr. Fred Maupin and resided with him, first in Portsmouth, Va. and later in Roanoke, Va. After more than a decade of marriage, Mr. Maupin died from a bone injury acquired while in the Navy.
During the years of her first two marriages, Mr. Lawrence was employed in retail in women's wear in Baltimore and cosmetics in Roanoke. She was the Frances Denney representative for many years at both Miller and Rhodes and Heironimus. She was a very engaging and successful salesperson.
In her fifties, Mrs. Lawrence married Mr. Jospeh D Lawrence, who at the time had retired as a division manager from Appalachian Power Company. Although Mrs. Lawrence was the granddaughter of a Methodist minister and grew up in the Methodist church, after marrying Mr. Lawrence she joined St. John's Episcopal Church and was active in that church for many years. She was also very active in a recovery fellowship where she was a most perceptive and helpful counselor for more than 45 years.
After the deathe of her third husband, Mrs. Lawrence was able to live independently due to no small measure on the unfailing loyalty and commitment of Mrs. Virginia Johnson of Salem, as well as the support and helpfulness of a number of friends, most of whom are now deceased. One who survives and whose helpfulness has been much appreciated is Mrs. Anne Stuart DeFoe of Roanoke.
Mrs. Lawrence is survived by four nieces, Mrs. Pauline Tidman of McLean, Va., Mrs.Sylvia Rogers of Shenandoah,Va.,and Mrs. Mary Ann Wilkerson and Mrs. Nancy Logar, both of Reno, Nev.
All funeral arrangements have been handled by Oakey's South.
There will be a visitation on Thursday, July 10, at St. John's Chapel at 12:30 p.m. followed by the service at St. John's at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be private.
