Joan, daughter of Clede and Lena (Workman) Blacker, was born on November 25, 1931, at the home of her grandparents, in Ionia, Kansas, and went to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 11, 2011, at her home in Mankato, Kansas, at the age of 80 years and 16 days.

Her 8 years of elementary education was at Couch Country School, then attended and graduated from Jewell Rural High School, Jewell, Kansas. She was a member of the high school band, chorus, and glee clubs.

In 1949, Richard "Dick" Waugh entered her life and they were married on November 13, 1949, at the Harmony Methodist Church in Mankato, Kansas. They set up housekeeping 6 miles north of Mankato, where they lived and raised their family. Due to failing health they moved to Mankato.

They are the parents of three children – Gerald (Gerry) Lee, Gayle Lynne, and Carl Terry. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 62 years; brother, Jim Blacker; grandson, Joshua Hadle; and daughter-in-law, Lorie Waugh.

She has always been the outdoor type girl, helping her father and then her husband with the field work. She raised large gardens and canned the produce. Joan took over the hogs and cattle chores after her husband went to work in town.

Her most exciting adventures to being out of doors, is when her and Dick would pack up the kids and camping gear, drive to Denver to join Dick's step-brother and family for vacation. They hooked on to their jeep and we all headed for the mountains. This became a yearly adventure for many years. It progressed from sleeping in tents to campers and was such a relaxing time.

Joan found time to bowl on the Coop team a few years. Her and Dick were 4-H leaders for many years. She and a very close friend hung wallpaper and cleaned houses for others. Joan worked at the Jewell County Courthouse for 25 years, in the Extension Office and the Appraisers Office. She retired in November, 1996. Joan and Dick enjoyed traveling to many Steam shows in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Texas. During her retirement she would help the curator of the Jewell County Museum for several years, and was always working wherever needed at the Threshing Bee and Farmers Market.

Her favorite past-time was doing Genealogy, jigsaw puzzles, keeping in contact with others on her computer.

Joan leaves to morn her death three children – Gerald Waugh of Mankato, Kansas, Gayle Waugh of Gillette, Wyoming, and Carl and wife, Carla Waugh of Mankato, Kansas; six grandchildren – Kerry Waugh of Manhattan, Kansas, Ryan Waugh of Mankato, Kansas, Nick Hadle and Nathan Hadle of Gillette, Wyoming, Jeremy Waugh of Gardner, Kansas, and Jennifer and husband, Vincent Urbaniak of Mankato, Kansas, great-granddaughter, Kaylee Hadle of Gillette, Wyoming; sisters – Neita and husband Don Colin and their family, Peggy Selvidge and her family; and sister-in-law, Delores (Blacker) Thomas and her family; and a host of other relatives including the Fales Families, the Heglin Families, and the Farris Families.
