Homer Ellis age 41 walked home from Delco-Remy where he was a pipefitter. He fell and died walking from the alley up to the house. My mother witnessed this from an upstairs bedroom she was a little girl and it was the start of the great depression. My grandmother didn't know anything about money and so she gave the insurance proceeds to Mrs. Wanamaker, the next door neighbor. Nonna Belle Oliver Ellis had four girls to raise. The sisters were June, Frances, Betty and my mom Margaret Ellis. Mrs. Wanamaker managed well. Each time there was a crisis such as Frances needing new shoes there would be a family meeting at the Wanamakers. It would be decided who got the old shoes, how much they would pay and who would kick in extra to help cover the shoes.
