"John E. Abel Jr., 63, a retired city garage employee and World War II veteran, died at 3 p.m. Sunday at his home, 109 Hershey Ave., after a long illness. He had been under a physician's care. His wife, Catherine L. Snyder, died in 1976. Before working at a city garage, Abel worked for the B.F. Goodrich Co. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European, Middle East and African campaigns and was awarded two Purple Heart medals. Abel was a member of the West End Ambulance Association, the Lancaster Auto Club, the American Association of Retired Persons, American Legion Post 34 and St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late John E. and Emma Marie Pickle Abel Sr. Surviving is a sister, Dorothy, Lancaster."
