Former GISD Superintendent A.O. Bird Succumbs

Funeral services for A.O. Bird, former Gonzales Independent School District Superintendent, were held this morning at 11 a.m. from the First United Methodist church with the Rev. Warren Hornung officiating.
Interment filled in the Gonzales Memorial Park under direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
Bird, 83, died Saturday afternoon in Memorial Hospital.
Longtime superintendent for both Gonzales and Dmiley Schools, he was born March 19, 1903 in Wilson county, the son of Claude B. and Susan Watkins Bird.
He married Virginia Clark Hicks on August 31, 1926 in Jacksonville, Tex., and she preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 1979.
A member of the First United Methodist Church, he served as Superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School for 42 years and taught a Bible class for many years. One of the classes in the church still bears his name.
He received his masters degree from Southwest Texas State University and went on to do some work on his doctoral degree at the University of Texas.
He has served on the Texad State Teachers Committee on local, district and state levels and served on the first committee for working out state-wide salary schedules.
Mr. Bird has served on local, district and state levels with the Parent-Teachers Association. He was very active in local civic affairs having served as president of the Gonzales Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Alamo District of State Teachers Association, the Gonzales county Teachers Association and the Retired Teachers Association.
He helped orb the senior citizens center in Gonzales and was very active in their cause. He was a member of the Golden Crescent Council, president of the local AARP Association and had served as chairman of the Red Cross for Gonzales County.
For all of his work and hours in civic ventures, he was names Citizen of the Year in 1981.
He was written up in WHO's Who in Methodism, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in South and Southwest and Who's Who in Texas.
