John Ligon Bridges began the practice of law in Danville KY in 1794 at the young age of 21. He was Mercer County's representative to the State Legislature in 1817-20 and was appointed Circuit Court Judge in 1820, holding that position until 1856.

In ~1803, he was married to Miss Anne Adair, the eldest daughter of General John Adair. His home in Harrodsburg KY, built c. 1820, is known as "Burford Hill".
