The Rev. Barbara Bowers Barrow, 71, of Lynchburg, passed away Dec. 5, 2011. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Vernie Barrow Jr.

Born Jan. 21, 1940, in Waynesboro, Va., she was a daughter of the late Leighton Whitener Bowers and Virginia Eoye Bowers.

Mrs. Barrow graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1955. She received her B.S. in business administration from Davis-Elkins College in Elkins, W.Va., in 1968, and went on to receive a Master of Divinity from Eastern Mennonite Seminary in 1975, and a Master of Education in counselor education from James Madison University in 1977.

She was ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church in 1978. She served as director of the Wesley Foundation at James Madison University; pastor of United Methodist Churches in Edinburg and Lynchburg; district superintendent of the Harrisonburg District of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church; and Virginia Conference director of higher education and campus ministry. She retired to The Villages in Florida in 2001.

She is also survived by her children, Judy Williams McMullen and husband, Robert, of Winchester, Va., Janice Williams Regan of Winchester, Va., Jenifer Williams Loker and husband, Keith, of Penn Laird, Va., the Rev. Alan Lester Barrow and wife, Libby, of Tulsa, Okla., Victor Lee Barrow of Richmond, Va., and Lenore Barrow Whitehead and husband, Robert, of Newport News, Va.; sisters, Beverly Bowers Giesecke and husband, Michael, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Julia Bowers Senger and husband, Kenneth, of Greenville, Va.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, and at other times at the residence.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, at Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Becky J. Cloud. Interment will follow in Amherst Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made, in lieu of flowers, to Chestnut Hill UMC, 4660 Fort Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24502.
