Alfred was born 13 February 1842 in Lincoln County Tennessee to Elijah Dillender and Rosannah Jane Clark Temple Dever.
He married Eliza Jane Baker 26 October 1862 in Marshall County Tennessee. On September 11 1863 he enlisted in the 5th Calvary Co C Tennessee as private and served until April 6 1865.

According to his army papers he was 6'1" with dark eyes and black hair. Also according to army records I have found he was accused of murder and highway robbery and incarcerated in the Union prison in Nashville on January 5 1864.
On December 27 1864 Alfred wrote a letter to General J H Miller asking him to look into his case as he had never been sentenced and had been incarcerated since January 1864.

After looking into his case and finding no records to indicate his guilt, innocence or even charges a Major General Lovell H Nou? recommended if nothing else could be ascertained that Dever be released and returned to active duty. He was mustered out in August 1865 with pay due from date of enlistment. All indications are and I believe he was falsely accused.

All records including a copy of the letter he wrote asking General Miller to look into his case can be found on my family tree at Ancestry.Com Johanna Dever family tree.

His only child, Rayford Elbert was born 5 April 1864 in Marshall Co Tennessee while Alfred was incarcerated.

June 5 1880 he was in Madison Co Alabama listed as a sharecropper and farrier. Rayford was 16 and helping him on the farm. According to pension records he was listed as an invalid June 22 1880 and filed for a pension.
Sometime around 1890 he and Eliza and some of Eliza's siblings and her mother moved to Delta County Texas with Rayford and Rayford's wife Minerva Jane Carpenter and their children. They settled at Route 3 Cooper, Delta County Texas and Rayford began farming in the rich black land of Delta County.

In 1894 he was living in Lake Creek Delta County Texas. We know this because we have a copy of a letter his brother William Riley wrote back home to Tennessee while he was in Texas visiting his sick brother. The letter is postmarked Lake Creek Texas which is a few miles east of Cooper. There is no longer a post office there and has not been in many years.
He died August 5 1896 in Hopkins County Texas just across the South Sulphur River from Delta County.
