Vester Edward Abbitt, 82, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2003. He was born on October 6, 1920, in Oklahoma City to James John and Myrtle (Byus) Abbitt.
He served in the U. S. Navy from 1941 to 1947. Vester was stationed in San Diego on December 7, 1941, and was immediately deployed to Pearl Harbor after the bombing. The sight of the still smoldering ships and debris when he and his shipmates pulled into the harbor was a sight Vester never forgot. He also participated in Operation Crossroads to test the Atomic Bomb in the Marshall Islands. He was what became known as an 'Atomic Veteran.' After serving in the Navy, Vester became employed with Oklahoma Gas & Electric Company. He retired from OG&E in 1982 after 31 years.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian (DeHart), his sons, Steven Edward (Lynn) and Gregory Keith (Vicki), his grandchildren, Scott Edward (Michele) Abbitt, Angela Renee' Abbitt and Kelly Serena Abbitt, his great-grandchildren Clay Edward Abbitt and Brinkli Michele Abbitt, five sisters, Frances (Joseph) Hayes of Muskogee, Lorraine (John) Chagaris of Oklahoma City, Evelyn Kron and Rodella Kenny of Everett, Washington, Delores (Ron) Dodds of Mount Vernon, Washington, two brothers, Jesse (Sherry) Abbitt of Camino Island, Washington and Dale (June) Abbitt of Seattle, Washington.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Charles Abbitt.
Services will be held at Bill Eisenhour Southeast on Saturday, September 20, 2003, with interment at Sunny Lane Cemetery.
