At the age of 84, John Ivan Childress went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday Oct. 11, 2006, at Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He was called "Johnny" or "Jack".

He was born May 12, 1922, in Cyril, Okla., to Henry N. Childress and Floy Cameron Childress. He married his beloved wife of 59 years, Edith Mae Rains, on June 1, 1942.

On March 6, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served beyond the duration of World War II. In this time he was with Company A 302nd Signal Operations BN, for the duration of World War II and then enlisted with Headquarters Battery 158th Field Artillery BN, Oklahoma National Guard. He served his country honorably in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe. He received awards for Good Conduct and Expert Rifle, the EAME Ribbon and four Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged June 12, 1950, as a Tech Sergeant.

He was the Owner/Operator of the Mobil Service Station in Chickasha, Okla., from 1950-52; a Jet Engine Mechanic-Tinker at AFB, Oklahoma, from 1952-57; then transferred to Edwards AFB, California, as a Civil Service Experimental Jet Engine mechanic in 1957. He retired in May 1977 as Flight Crew Chief (GS17) Instructor Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Edwards AFB, California.

He had a longtime Missionary Baptist Church affiliation with Old CA Directory and ABA churches.

He was preceded in death by his faithful wife, Edith Mae Childress (Rains); brothers, Junior Newton, Henry Lee and James Donald; his sister, Helen Wanda (Taylor); and one great-grandchild, Chelsey Amber.

He is survived by children Duane Edward, John Ivan, Karan Jean (Qualls), Jerry Donald, Sheryl Kay (Underwood), Brenda Sue (Brown), Janet Larae (Vestal) and Cathy Ann Childress; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Tommy Mix Childress and surviving relatives from the Childress and Cameron clan, and friends throughout the U.S.

Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, in the Chapel at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home with a service to follow at 11 a.m. with Thomas "Billy" Rains and Pastor Sherman Rains (brothers-in-law) officiating. Music director will be Duane Edward Childress and pallbearers will be U.S. military personnel.

An interment service will follow at Bosque-Bello Cemetery.
