Maurits was a tall man with brown hair and blue eyes and a booming voice because he was deaf in one ear. My mother, uncle and grandmother lived with them in 1933 on their vast ranch of several thousand acres at Courtland, California, named "Amistad." My mother remembers him driving them to the ranch in a new Cadillac. He studied Argiculture at Cornell University where he met his future wife who was also a student.He also studied at the University of California at Berkeley in the same subject. He raised excellent horses. Father of nine children. He was quite a character.
