In 1925 George obtained a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) known today as Oregon State University. While at OAC he was an all-conference basketball center in the Pacific Coast Conference. He went on to obtain a Masters degree in education.

For two years after graduation George taught school in Centralia, Washington. He then moved to Portland, Oregon to become an assistant football and basketball coach at Benson Polytechnic High School. He soon was teaching Physics and Mathematics and in later years he served as Vice-Principal in charge of deportment and was known for being a disciplinarian. He was at Benson a total of 36 years.

George married Olive Elizabeth Moore on 5 June 1926, the daughter of Walter Gratton Moore and Louise Ernestine Kissel Moore. He and Olive had two children; Laverne Jean and Dwight Walter. George and Olive divorced in November 1948.

George remarried on 10 June 1950 to Mary Whippo Beck, an English teacher at Benson. Mary was the daughter of Charles Benton Beck and Mary Maria Whippo Beck. They did not have any children.
