"One heart-rendering tragedy occurring in the (J. D. Blair) family was the accidental killing of Blair Watson, the oldest grandson of Papa, and the son of Irene. Blair was a most promising lad and was a favorite of all. His death came not from a hunting accident but from a playful prank of another little lad who saw the pistol on a mantel. Taking it he playfully snapped it at Blair with tragic results. The men of the family have always contended that the safest guard is to teach properly the young men and boys the use of weapons and the danger of carelessness." (From a chapter, "Recreational Life of the Sons," from "John D. Blair and His Family," written by his son, J.D. Blair, II)
