Andrew Jackson Stetson enlisted as a Private in Company E, 4th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, a three month regiment, on May 6, 1861. He was mustered out July 22, 1861 at Long Island, Boston Harbor, Massachusetts. He next enlisted as a Corporal in Company D, 38th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on August 20, 1862 and was promoted to Sergeant on July 1, 1863. He was killed during the Third Battle of Winchester (a.k.a. the Battle of Opequon Creek) in Frederick County, Virginia.
