Plyler Lehondius McMahan was described as "a preacher before his time" by those who new him best. He was pastor at numerous Southern Baptist Churches in North Carolina and Tennessee. His modern theology was too important to be limited to just to one church,so,about every two years,Plyler followed the Masters call to deliver his message to a different community. Among the many Churches that he Pastored was California Creek,(Madison County),Little River(Transylvania County),Bill's Creek(Rutherford County),Rebel's Creek Baptist Church, Boonford,(Mitchell Co) North Carolina, Flag Pond (Tn),and Zion Baptist Church(Yancey Co.),

It was at Rebel's Creek that Plylers' daughters,Vivian and Hope met and married their husbands. In 1939, Vivian married George Murdock, and in 1941 Hope married Roy Queen. Plyler was a big man with a strong personality which had authority and commanded respect. At an early age,he looked around him at the poor and proud mountain people struggling to keep enough food on their tables to feed their large familes. Always threatened with a feeling of destitute, these people needed something to give them hope, and Plyler McMahan,as well as other Men of God,brought this hope to them in the form of Religion. In 1920,Plyler married Effie Young, together they raised three children, Vivian, Hope and Claude. Plyler died in 1982 at the age of 92, Effie died in 1992 at the age of 94.They are buried in Little River Baptist Church Cemetery in Transylvania County, North Carolina.
