John S. Adams, 59, former resident of Newport, and retired president and publisher of the Atlantic City Press, died Monday at his home, 19 N. Mansfield Ave., Margate, N. J.
Mr. Adams was born in Huntingdon, Pa., on May 30, 1907. He was graduated from Newport High School and received a bachelor of arts and masters of arts degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He also did graduate study at Penn State and Harvard Universities. He taught 12 years in the field of education at preparatory schools.
During World War II he served three years on active duty with the U. S. Navy.
In 1951, he went to Atlantic City as secretary-assistant treasurer of the Atlantic City Press, headed by his brother. In 1956, he was named publisher of the paper and in 1963, president of the Press Publishing Company. He retired on July 1, 1964.
Mr. Adams was active in community affairs and was cited many times for his activities as head of the Atlantic County Teercentenary Committee in connection with New Jersey's Teercentenary of 1964.
His further affiliations included Atlantic City Rotary Club, vestryman in All-Saints Episcopal Church, member of the Institute of Newspaper Finance Officers, American Newspaper Publishers Association, Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association, New Jersey Press Association and the Atlantic County Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Williams of Pittsburgh; two sons, Christopher and Andrew; a sister, Mrs. Helen A. DeRiemer of Margate, N. J.; a brother, Rolland L. Adams of Bethlehem; and a granddaughter.
Funeral services were held yesterday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Margate, the Rev. Holt M. Jenkins officiating.
Further rites will be held today, Thursday, at 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home on Walnut Street here. The Rev. Elmer Drumm, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in Newport Cemetery.
