(September 26, 2003; Darien, IL) The Order of Carmelites under the direction of the Very Reverend John F. Russell, O. Carm., S.T.D., Prior Provincial mourns the loss of the Rev. Noel G. Ahrens, O. Carm., 74, who died at the Heritage of Norwood Home on Thursday, Sept. 25, in Norwood, New Jersey, where he was living in retirement.
Fr. Ahrens, the son of the late George and Helen (Furey) Ahrens, was born in Englewood, N.J., on Dec. 1, 1928. He is survived by a brother, Joseph Ahrens. Fr. Ahrens attended Bryant Public School and St. Anastasia School in Teaneck, N.J., before entering Mt. Carmel Prep Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ont., to begin studies for the priesthood in the Carmelite Order. He professed his first vows at the Carmelite Novitiate in New Baltimore, Pa., on Aug. 15, 1947, and his solemn vows at Whitefriars Hall in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 15, 1950.
After completing his college studies at Mt. Carmel College in Niagara Falls, Ont., he enrolled at Whitefriars Hall in Washington, D.C., for his theology studies.
On June 6, 1953, Fr. Noel Ahrens was ordained to the priesthood at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. He also did graduate studies at the Catholic University of America there in library science. In addition, he obtained an M.A. degree in pastoral counseling psychology at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. During his career as a Carmelite, Fr. Ahrens taught at both Joliet Catholic High School in Joliet, IL, and Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago, IL. He also was an associate pastor at St. Therese parish in Cresskill, N.J., St. Cyril's parish in Chicago, IL, Mt. Carmel parish in Houston, Tex., and St. Cecilia's parish in Englewood, N.J. He also served as a hospital chaplain in Tucson, Ariz., and Englewood, N.J. In addition he served at St. Therese Chapel in Paramus, N.J.
From 1977 to his recent retirement, Fr. Ahrens worked as a counselor at Long Lane Reform School in Middletown, Conn. He was also a member of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, the Association of Mental Health Clergy, and the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.
