Van Benson Locklear died Nov. 6, 2011 from cancer.

He was born to Dewey and Mary Locklear on Sept. 29, 1933, in Pembroke, N.C. Van attended elementary school and graduated from high school in Pembroke. After graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served a total of 27 years before retiring as a warrant officer. He was active in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He then worked for civil service 20 years before retiring. Van was a member of the Abingdon Ruritan Club in Bena for many years, in which he was very dedicated and loved to help those in need.

Preceded in death by his first wife Catherine Buck Locklear and step-son Glen W. Adams, he leaves behind to honor his memory his wife, Sue Locklear; two daughters, Donna S. Rowland and husband, Scott, Terri L. Voris and husband, Neil; a total of 10 grandchildren; four sisters, Edna Locklear, Magdalene Gore and husband, Earl, Shelby Jean Patrick, Pauline Litton and husband, Roger; one brother, Clyde Locklear, all of North Carolina; one stepdaughter, Susan Knapp and husband, Jim; one stepson, Darrell Miley and wife, Kathie; and number of nephews, nieces and cousins.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dale Seley of First Baptist Church, Newport News, officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
