Charles Leonard Burton, 94, Marietta, Ga., formerly of Gadsden, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, after a brief illness.
Leonard was born in Eastaboga to Bernice Dickie Burton and Charles Cleveland Burton on March 18, 1917.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Isabelle Davies Stange Burton, Marietta, Ga.; his son, Michael Davies Burton and his wife, Jessie Stull, Buchannan, Va.; his daughters-in-law, Audrey Bailey Burton, Ashburn, Va., and Janet Porter Stange, Birmingham; and stepdaughter, Eda Lynne Stange Scopel, and her husband, Paul, Marietta Ga.
Leonard is also survived by his granddaughters, Dr. Heather Burton-Zalar, Leesburg, Va., Allison Burton Mull and her husband, Benjamin, San Jose, Calif., Shenan Michele Lovern, Vinton, Va., and her husband, Jason, and Sarah Alyce Scopel, Sedona, Ariz.
He is also survived by his grandsons, Richard Adam Burton, Reston, Va., and his wife, Andrienne, Brandon Bailey Burton, Ashburn, Va., and his wife, Alison, and Matthew Stewart Burton, Bumpass, Va., and his wife, Heather.
He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Alexandra Virginia Mull, Richard Logan Mull, Kaitlyn Marie Zalar, Andrew Nicholas Zalar, Jackson Leonard Zalar, Mia Evangeline Burton, Ashlynn Faith Lovern and Avery Carol Burton.
Leonard Burton was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Beatrice Irene Davies Burton, in November 1986; his stepson, Benjamin H. Stange, in April 1996; and his son, Richard Leonard Burton, in May 2007.
Leonard Burton graduated from Howard College (Samford University) in May 1940, which he attended on scholarships for basketball and baseball with Coach Billy Bancroft. After graduation, he worked for Stockham Pipe and Valves in Birmingham, where he also played semi-professional baseball, later signing with the New Orleans Pelicans. He served his country as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps 92nd Squadron during World War II.
Leonard Burton later moved his family to Washington, D.C., where he started his own company. He was a manufacturer's representative for the pipe and foundry industry. After retiring from the business, he returned home to Alabama in 1987. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Gadsden, where he served the church as a deacon.
Leonard Burton was also a member of the Gadsden Lions Club, where he faithfully volunteered as a vision screening examiner for the elementary schools in the area. He was selected as the Volunteer of the Week in January 2000 by The Gadsden Times for his service to the community.
