Ruth Ellen Claar was born in Decatur County, KS, on March 20, 1902. She was the daughter of Arthur Stanley Claar and Ora Miller Claar. Ruth moved to Phillipsburg with her parents in June 1912. She married Marvin Smith on February 16, 1920. Ruth and Marvin had three children: Wilma, Wayne and Genevieve. Ruth died January 29, 1924, at her home nine miles northwest of Phillipsburg, KS. She was survived by her husband; her parents; her three children; her brothers Adren, Elden, Victor, Lyle, and Beryl; and her sisters Vina Gillipsie, Pansey Storm, Edith Claar, and Zelma Claar. Burial was in the Iowa Union Cemetery.
