Michigan State Bar Commissioner, 1960-1968

John was the son of George and Eva (Scott) Clark. He graduated from Bad Axe High School. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1933, and then received his law degree in 1936. He married Sally Sovereign in Bay City. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, and served in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. John practiced law in Detroit, and then moved to Petoskey. He loved to hunt and enjoyed playing the saxophone in local jazz bands. He was the commissioner of the State Bar of Michigan from 1960-1968, served as the president of the State Bar from 1965-19666, member of the State Bar Grievance Board 1970-1972, chairman special commission to review judicial articles of Michigan Constitution 1971-1972, delegate to House of Delegates, American Bar Association 1968-1975, president American Judicature Society 1973-1975, chairman representative assembly of State Bar of Michigan 1972-1974, president of Little Traverse Hospital 1970-1977, chairman Advisory Council National Center for State Courts 1977-1978, member Finance Committee National Center for State Courts 1975-1978, chairman Coordinating Council of National Court Organization 1978-1979, Most Distinguished Award, Michigan Association of the Professions 1974, member State Officers Compensation Commission 1976-1979, chairman in 1978, Fellow America Bar Foundation, Fellow American College of Probate Counsel, numerous corporate directorships and recipient of the Herbert Harley Award from the American Judicature Society Sept. 21, 1984.
