Dr. Grant R. Born, died at the age of 60 near his own home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was born on July 31, 1938, in Petoskey, the son of Dr. Grant E. and Genevieve (Edgerly) Born.

He graduated from Petoskey High School in 1956, and then attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1964, he received his degree as Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He began postgraduate training and study in 1964 with a rotating internship at the Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital (Metro).

In 1965, he began his private practice in Family Medicine in Grand Rapids, continuing four years later with specialty areas in Gynecology. During this time, his extensive training and study continued.

He introduced Cryosurgery for cervical dysplasia in 1969, during a basic course in Cryosurgery at the University of California, where he returned in 1977 to introduce CO2 Laser in West Michigan during a basic course in Gynecological Laser Therapy. For years he attended the biannual ACAM educational meetings on preventive medicine. He was a staff member of Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Other memberships included, the Medical Writer Association, the Honorary International Academy of Preventive Medicine, the Clinical Ecology Society, the Kent County Osteopathic Association, the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Association and the American Preventive Medical Association.

From 1969-1971, he was Chief of Staff for the Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital (now Grand Rapids Metro Hospital). He held the patent on the teaching system, "CO2 Laser Surgery" and the copyright on the manual, "Laser Surgery CO2” which he wrote and developed. Dr. Born opened the first laser center in West Michigan.

Dr. Born was the key negotiator for the acceptance of Osteopathic Physicians into the American Society of Colposcopy and Cryosurgery, and held the first membership. His Memberships were many, including the American Society of Contemporary Medicine and Surgery. He started, and was the Charter Member of the American Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology and the American Gynecological Laser Society.

He was also a Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Chelation Therapy. His teachings on and gynecology preventive medicine took him around the world and included groups like the World Health Organization and the Department of OB Gynecology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida.

The research and contributions to the medical field by Dr. Born were numerous. He was currently serving as Vice President of the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), a position he held since 1995, and was on the Board of Directors from 1992-1996. He published more than fifteen articles and was highly regarded as a guest lecturer at symposiums and conferences held across the country. He served as President and Member of the American Society for General Laser Surgery from 1987-1991. Since 1974, he had served as a Clinical Assistant Professor for the College of Present Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University.

“He was a man whose work was twenty years ahead of his time…” Such was the sentiment of those who knew Grant R. Born, D.O. He passed away October 1, 1998, near his home in Michigan. He is remembered as a caring physician who was open minded and willing to try new things.

Dr.Born had many hobbies, from hunting to politics, and actively supported his church and community. He was a devout Christian man who incorporated his deep faith in his daily medical practice. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his eldest three sons, Brandon, Blake and Grant, Jr., while relishing the time he spent with his youngest children, Drew and Allie. Tammy L. Geurkink Born. D. O. was not only his partner in life, but also his partner at the clinic, As husband and wife they enjoyed a good life and traveled extensively.

With a family history of heart problems, he suffered heart failure in 1982, and after receiving bypass surgery and a poor prognosis for recovery, he began a personal journey into the research of alternative medicine, including chelation therapy. In 1982, seventeen years after beginning his family practice, Dr. Born turned his focus to preventive medicine and the Born Preventive Health Care Clinic was launched, which included sports medicine and chelation therapy. He was a pioneer in the field of preventive medicine.
