Joseph was married to Mary Jeane Broughton.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a 2nd Lieutenant, bombardier. He was shot down and kept as an American prisoner of war in a German prison camp until his release in May, 1945. He was awarded the purple heart and lost his eye from the crash of his B-24 bomber.
Joseph owned the Bluff City Paper Stock Company in Memphis, Tennessee and would later sell the business to Alton Box Board Co.
Joseph was a member of the Ridgeway Country Club in Memphis.
He died from head trauma resulting from a fall at home. He was 86 years old.
