His given name at birth was Joseph Henochsberg. However, prior to World War II and his enlistment, he had the name legally changed to Joseph H. Brooks. Supposedly, this was to prevent any potential problems with being shot down behind German enemy lines. Joseph must have had a premonition with the Jewish influence of his name should he ever be captured by the Nazis. And, that is exactly what happened.

Joseph was married to Mary Jeane Broughton.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a 2nd Lieutenant, bombardier. He was shot down and kept as an American prisoner of war in a German prison camp until his release in May, 1945. He was awarded the purple heart and lost his eye from the crash of his B-24 bomber.

Joseph owned the Bluff City Paper Stock Company in Memphis, Tennessee and would later sell the business to Alton Box Board Co.

Joseph was a member of the Ridgeway Country Club in Memphis.

He died from head trauma resulting from a fall at home. He was 86 years old.
