Funeral services for Clay County Sheriff Virgil C Middleton, age 55, of West Point were held Saturday, November 21 at First Baptsit Church in West Point. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Gwin Middleton and Dr. David E Hall officiating. Speical music was by Mrs. Kay Simmons. Sheriff Middleton died Thursday, November 19 at the Golden Triangle Medical Center in Columbus, following a brief illness.

A native of Webster County, he had lived in Clay County the past 28 years. He was a U S Army veteran of World War II and a member of West End Baptist Church in West Point.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Marianne Sisson Middleton of West Point; two sons, Curtis Middleton and Carl Middleton, both of West Point; three daughters, Mrs. Mike (Margaret) Brown, Mrs. Myron (Linda) Foster and Miss Janet Middleton, all of West Point; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A B Middleton of Winona; three brothers, Dr. William A Middleton and Daniel S Middleton, both of Winona and Harold C Middleton of Benton; one sister, Mrs. Edna Pittman of Winona and four grandchildren, Tona, Michael, Brian and Alan.

Pallbearers were Sammy McNeel, Bob Moore, Bobby Lane, Rex Pumphrey, Tommy Calder, C B Thompson, Tim Horner and Pirl Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers were Clay County Elected Officials, all attending law enforcement officers, members of the Clay County Bar Association, the attending physicians and medical assistants at the Golden Triangle Medical Center and Ivy Memorial Hospital and participating and charter members of the Mississippi Sheriff's Boys' and Girls' Ranch.

Calvert Funeral Home of West Point was in charge of arrangements.
