"ST. MARY'S PARISH...PAST AND PRESENT

The first Catholic families who settled in Sandusky arrived in the early 1830¹s Irish who suffered the Great Potato Famine and the Germans who fled the political upheaval in their country. By 1840, the immigrant Catholics had been given a priest by Cleveland Bishop John Baptist Purcell a Frenchman, Father Projectus Joseph Machebeuf. In a letter dated May 26, 1841, Father Machebeuf stated, ³My congregation at Sandusky City is composed of fifty or sixty families, the greater part of whom are Irish and the rest, German. Most of them are poor, with no resources other than their day¹s wages.²
Five years later Holy Angels Church was completed and dedicated. By 1852 the number of German immigrants had increased so that Bishop Amadeus Rappe assigned Deacon Felix Boff to assist Father Vincent Conlan, who by then was Pastor of Holy Angels. A year later, in 1853, a petition was sent to the Bishop seeking permission to organize a separate congregation and to have separate services in Holy Angels until the German-speaking Catholics were able to build a church for themselves. Permission was granted and Bishop Rappe assigned the Rev.
John T. Dolweck to serve as the first Pastor for the German-speaking Catholics in Sandusky.
In June of 1855, The Rev. James Hammene succeeded Father Dolweck.
Also, in that same month, on the 20th, two lots on the corner of Jefferson and Decatur Streets were obtained as the site for a modest stone church which was begun at once.
With the building of the church, the separate congregation of German Catholics at Holy Angels became the independent Parish of St. Mary¹s.

.... Since Father Dolweck, the first Pastor, there have been twenty more priests in the past 150 years who have cared for the approximately 20,000 parishioners at St. Mary¹s."
