FUNERAL OF MR. GATHER MACE
The funeral of Mr. Gather Mace was held by Mr. Bob Whitte from Asheville. The service was held at Peeks Chapel Cemetery on Bull Creek. The people were greatly disappointed when they arrived at the grave yard. They found the gate closed and locked by someone. It being that Mace and Whitte were good friends and it was Mace's request to preach his funeral, he stood on the outside and preached and some of the congregation stood on the outside and some climbed over the fence. The had to help Mrs. Mace over the fence so that she might place a raft of flowers on her husband's grave. The citizens were very badly opposed to the locking of the gate so when the funeral was over Mr. Whitte's partner, who came along with him, prayed a wonderful prayer on the outside of the cemetery. He prayed for the one who locked the gate and that God might bless him and be with him in all his undertakings. The Mace family and citizens returned to their homes heart broken over the way the cemetery was closed and locked.
