On Hazelwood Trail stands the old home of John C. Carden and his family. This house, according to information from Willie Hazelwood, Jr. in 1992, is built of loqs, later covered with batten boards. At that time it was being used for storage. Recent information is the owner had began [sic] to remove the boards in order to restore it to its original log siding but did not complete the job before his death.

Halifax deed records show in 1847 John Carden purchased from Paul Venable a total of seven hundred thirty-eight and one half acres of land on both sides of Difficult Creek. On this creek John and his sons operated the Carden Mill for many years. Eventually the mill and some of the land was sold to William Hazelwood, Sr., and later passed to his familv.

John C. Carden was a descendant of Robert Carden who died in Goochland County in 1785, leaving a large family. We soon find members of this family in the counties of Chartotte, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, and Powhatan.

John and his wife Elizabeth were parents of eleven children. James Benjamin did hot marry. George Henry married lsabella Ann Hudson. Paulina married George Smith. Mary Imogene married Horatio Alex Hudson. John Calvin married Robina Whitlow. Peter Smith married Maria Lousia [sic] Jones. Elizabeth "Bettie" married Phillip Johnson. Charles Depriest married Zora Bibb Whitlow. Sara "Sallie" married Horatio Alex Hudson. Amanda Kelsta married Henry C. Hudson. Robert S. did not marry. Mary died young, leaving two young sons, and Horatio Hudson later married her sister, Sara.

John Carden and sons of his familv were members of nearby Fork Baptist Church. In May 1857 John deeded two acres of land, value five dollars, to Fork Church. He and his son, James Benjamin, were listed as trustees of the church. Records of Dan River Baptist Association show John and several of his sons as delegates to associational meetings representing Fork Baptist. The obituary of Isabella Ann, wife of George Henry Carden, states she was a member of Fork.

On the former Carden propertv is the old Carden Cemetery, enclosed with metal fencing. The oldest graves so far identified are of John Carden in 1867 and Elizabeth in 1869. Among others identified buried there are four of their sons who served in the Confederate Army: Sgt. James Benjamin, Pvt. George Henry, Pvt. Charles DePriest, and Pvt. Jonn C. After many years of neglect, in December 2006, a thorough cleanup of this cemetery was done by the John Jordan Camp, SCV and the Halifax Chapter 1321, UDC, to honor the memory of those who served in the Confederate Army

Peter Smith Carden was a medical doctor who practiced in the Clover area. From obituaries, and other newpaper articles, some personal knowledge, it seems the Cardens have been good hard-working, productive citizens. It could be said of many of them as it was of Elizabeth in her obituary appearing in the Virginia Baptist State paper, "The Religious Herald", "She was a consistent Church member for thirty-five years, a meek and humble Christian."
