Violinist and Composer. One of the leading violin virtuosos of his time, he was also the first Romanian musician to win international acclaim. His "Romanian Rhapsodies Nos. 1 and 2" (1908) are still concert hall favorites. Enesco was born in Dorohoiu, Romania. A child prodigy, he won prizes for violin playing at the Vienna and Paris Conservatories, and began his professional concert career in 1899. After World War I he settled in Paris, though he continued to make regular visits to Bucharest and played an important role in musical life there. Enesco composed in many styles and genres (including three symphonies and an opera), but virtually all his other music has been overshadowed by the popularity of his "Rhapsodies." His pupils included Yehudi Menuhin.
