DR INEZ WAGER
BRISTOL, Tenn -- Dr. Inez Morton Wager 94 [abt 1907] died Wed. (Apr 11, 2001) in Wellmont Hospice House
She was the daughter of the late Jonathan Morrell and Mary Katherine Morton. She was born in Sullivan County on Holston Mountain, and grew up in Kingsport. She lived part of her adult life at the Homestead, east of Bristol, until she married Dr. Willis Wager.
For the next few years. she and Willis lived in Boston, Mass., and were in great demand at Boston University where they team-taught Emily Dickenson.
In later years, the Wagers lived on campus at King College where they team-taught English Literature classes.
Mrs. Wager's Masters thesis was on Fugitive Poets of Nashville, and she received that degree from New York Univ. in 1936. She did her undergraduate work at Flora McDonald, where she later taught, as well as at Mary Baldwin College.
Upon arriving at King College in 1943, she taught mathematics to a military unit of 35 preflight trainees for the U. S. Government on the King Campus. Later she became Dean of Women and taught English classes at King College. Among many former students were Rep. James Quillen, author Katherine Paterson, and professional actor, Cilk Cozart.
Dr. Inez Wager was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Blue Stocking Club, Music Club, and the History Club.
She was receded in death by her husband, Dr. Willis Wager; and sister, Nell Morton.
Survivors include one sister, Lucille Early, Bluff City; one nephew and wife, David and Pat Early, Seattle, WA; Mrs. Madie Early, the widow of nephew, Jan Early, St. Louis, MO; two cousins, Bob O'Dell of Bluff City, and Sue O'Dell, Blountville.
Calling hours will be from 1 to 2:30 Fri. at First Presbyterian Church.
Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Fri. [4/13/2001] in the church with Dr. Gordon Turnbull and Dr. Miller Liston officiating.;
Burial will be in Shipley Cem.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Tom Peake, Al Nida, Dr. William Wade, Dr. Ed Burke, Dr. John Gaines, and Dr. Craig McDonald.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jack E. Snider, Joe nd Sue Hakes, and special caregivers, Pam Zerkle and Carolyn Holf.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to King College, 1350 Kind College Rd., Bristol TN, 37620 for the Wager Endowment Fund.
