Fred was a consummate gentleman of the World War II era, loving husband and kind friend. He was born in Galveston, Texas, to Fred and Margaret Allen. He was a brother to three sisters. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Sept. 22, 1941, in Galveston and trained as an aviator, flying various fighter planes. He was released from active duty in December 1945 in San Francisco. He then attended the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated with a B.S. in business. While in California he met his future wife, Nancy Cooper, and they were married in 1950. They relocated to Portland in 1952. After building his career in industrial distribution, Fred opened his own business in 1984, serving local industries statewide, such as Boeing and Bingham Willamette. He owned and operated his company with his son until 2007, when he retired. Fred is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nancy Allen; son, Mark Allen; grandsons, Jeff and Scott Allen; great-grandson Evan; and great-granddaughter, Olivia. Fred will be inurned Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, in Willamette National Cemetery.
