Writer. By the age of 18, he had become a professor at the Lycée Charlemagne. He met Alexander Dumas through mutual friends and asked Dumas to rewrite a play of his with the freedom to publish under his own name. It became "Le Chevalier d'Harmental." This led to a collaboration beginning in 1838 where Maquet created the plot and characters with Dumas adding dialogue and colorful details. The publisher insisted on omitting Maquet's name from the title page. When the collaboration ended in 1851, Maquet sued unsuccessfully for credit and royalties. He collaborated with Dumas on eighteen novels and ten plays, including "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Three Musketeers." He also wrote historical romances, plays and an opera libretto on his own. In 1861 he became an officer of the Legion of Honor and died comfortably and well-off.
