Lt. Colonel Hostetler first enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. and was discharged in 1946, attaining the rank of Corporal, after service in World War II. He later joined the U.S. Army and was eventually promoted to the Officer staff and then retired as a Lt. Colonel. He was awarded the Marine Corps. Good Conduct medal, the World War II Victory medal, the American Theater Campaign medal, the Armed Forces Reserve medal, the Army Reserves Components Achievement medal, the General T.J. Stewart medal, the Pennsylvania Service Ribbon, the Pennsylvania 20 year Service medal, the Marksman badge with pistol bar, and the Sharpshooter medal with automatic rifle bar.
