The 1910 US Census of Brandon, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 33 Y/O William Green Tate, a farmer, and his 27 Y/O wife, Josie (Josephine (Mince) Tate. There were three children living in the household: 6 Y/O Arthur Russell Tate; 4 Y/O Oscar E. Tate and 2 Y/O Harry B. Tate. NOTE: Beulah M. Tate, their daughter, would be born in 1911 probably in Brandon, DeKalb Co., AL.
The 1920 US Census of Lydia, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 43 Y/O William Green Tate, a railroad employee, and his 39 Y/O wife, Josie (Josephine Mince) Tate. Also living in the household were their children: 16 Y/O Arthur Russell Tate; 14 Y/O Oscar E. Tate; 12 Y/O Harry B. Tate and their 9 Y/O daughter, "Bula" (Beulah M. Tate). Interestingly, this census page enumerated the family of 50 Y/O Balona T. Mince a few households away from the Tate dwelling. Balona Mince, the brother of Josephine (Mince) Tate, was enumerated as a 10 Y/O in the 1880 US census of Dekalb Co., AL in the the household of Rev. Alfred Newman Mintz (Mince).
The 1930 US Census of Fort Payne, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 52 Y/O William Green Tate, a railroad carpenter, and his 48 Y/O wife. Josie J. (Josephine Mince) Tate. Living in the household were their children: 24 Y/O Oscar E. Tate, a drug store book keeper and 17 Y/O Beulah M. Tate who would later marry John Bulow Appleton. Surprisingly, living in the household next door was 44 Y/O William Wesley Cochran whose occupation was railroad telegrapher. His 42 Y/O wife, Cora Lee (Brown) Cochran, and their 20 Y/O daughter, E. Gladys Cochran, whose occupation was public school teacher, were also living in the household. Gladys Cochran would later marry Jesse L. Appleton, the brother of John Bulow Appleton.
It appears that Beulah M. Tate married John Bulow Appleton in early 1939.
The 13 Apr 1940 US Census of Fort Payne, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 29 Y/O John Bulow Appleton, born in Alabama. He was employed as a service man for the local water service company. His 28 Y/O wife, Beulah (Tate) Appleton and their 5 month old son, John Bulow Appleton, Jr. were also living in the household. Beulah Appleton was employed as clerk at the County Agent's Office. Also living in the household were Beulah's parents; 63 Y/O William Green Tate (no occupation), 58 Y/O Josephine Tate and their 12 year old daughter, Jo Tate, e. g. Beulah's sister. Note: On 22 Jul 1944 during WWII while working at Republic Steel Corporation in Gadsden, AL as either a train switchman or a brakeman, John Bulow Appleton was killed in a train accident (See his memorial for details).
