South African religious leader and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. A native of Woodstock, near Cape Town, he studied first at Saint Joseph College, in Rodenbosch, then at the University of Cape Town, and finally at the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum "De Propaganda Fide," in Rome. He was ordained, on December 21, 1935, in Cape Town. From 1940 to 1948, he was editor of "The Southern Cross", then he did pastoral work in Cape Town, until his election as titular bishop of Stettorio and his appointment as Apostolic vicar of Cape Town, on March 12, 1950. Less than a year later, on January 11, 1951, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Cape Town. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal, on February 22, 1965. He served as President of the Southern Africa Episcopal Conference. He participated in both conclaves of 1978. He resigned the pastoral government of his archdiocese, on October 20, 1984. He passed away in his episcopal city.
