She was born in Magoffin County Kentucky the daughter of Farish Montgomery and Sarah (Skaggs) Montgomery. She was married to Lee Howard. Mary and Lee had two sons, Lee Howard Jr. and Paul Harrison, and four daughters, Esta, Angie, Noretta and Mary. She also had 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great grandchildren. Mary was a homemaker and a member of Tarklin Old Regular Baptist Church of Paintsville, and a past member of the Johnson County Republican Women's Club.
