"Former Sheriff dies at 92
Former Spartanburg County Sheriff B.B. Brockman, died yesterday
at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was 92. A native of
Spartanburg County, Belton Bryant Brockman of 118 Penarth Road,
Spartanburg, served as sheriff from 1944-1960 and had served in
the sheriff's department since 1929. He was past president of the
South Carolina Sheriff's Association, having served two terms and
also served as vice president of the National Sheriff's Association.
"He was one of the most fearless sheriffs I have ever known," said
former Spartanburg Mayor Bob Stoddard. He was very fair minded.
He wanted to be sure a person was guilty before he was arrested."
Former state Sen. Charlie Moore remembered Brockman as a
dedicated sheriff who surrounded himself with good officers whom
he remained loyal to. "He made a lot of friends and kept them and
did his duty at the same time," Moore said. Brockman was the
husband of Mittie Fowler Brockman to whom he has been married
since 1915 and the son of the late Henry and Ella Hendrix
Brockman. He was a member of Bethel Unitd Methodist Church
and was a former teacher of the Men's Bible Class. Also surviving
are two sons, Belton H. (Bunny) Brockman of Spartanburg and
Carlyle L. Brockman of Duncan; three daughters, Myrtle B. Sublett
and Margaret B. Ivey, both of Spartanburg and Hilda B. Suitt of
Greenville; two brothers, W. Gary Brockman of Greer and H. Toy
Brockman of Woodruff; a sister, Mattie Lou Fowler of Woodruff;
eleven grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren. Visitation
will be held from 2 to 2:45 p.m. tomorrow at Floyd's Greenlawn
Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at
Greenlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. W. Harvey Floyd, Jr. and
the Rev. Dr. Charles A. Graves. In lieu of flowers, memorials may
be made to the Trustee's Memorial Fund, Bethel United Methodist
Church, 245 South Church Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29301. Floyd's
Greenlawn Chapel is in charge of arrangements."
2. In 1930 his occupation was that of a jailer at the county jail.
