Obituary in unknown paper: Gasoline Burns Fatal To Women, Mrs. Reel and Mrs. Hale Die From Injuries Received When Cleaning Fluid Ignites. Mrs. Jennie Reel, 74 and her daughter, Mrs. B.E. Hale, 37, who were burned Saturday afternoon at their home, 603 Midland Drive, Brainerd, succumbed Sunday night at Newell's sanitarium. Mrs. Hale died shortly before 8 o'clock, and her mother-in-law passed away an hour and a half later. Gasoline which Mrs. Hale was using in cleaning the apartment over her husband's store caught on fire. Her attempt to check the blaze with a broom only spread the flames and set fire to the clothing of Mrs. Reel, who was a cripple. Cries of the two women brought Mr. Hale and A.J. Anderson, who were downstairs in the store, to the scene, and both suffered burns of the hands in their desperate efforts to save the mother and daughter. The bodies of both victims were removed to Coulter's Funeral Home. Mrs. Hale had lived in Chattanooga fo the past four years and was a member of the Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. John Owensby of Dayton. Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by two children, Mrs. Artie Virginia Head and Virgil Hale; three brothers, Ed Owensby of Cleveland, O., and Lee Owensby and Charles Owensby of Miami, Fla.; five sisters, Mrs. J.F. Bramlett of Evensville, Mrs. Alice Austin of Bartow, Fla.; Mrs. J.A. Anderson of Chattanooga, Mrs. J.H. West and Miss Lula Owensby of Dayton. Mrs. Hale had been a resident of Chattanooga for four years and a member of the Baptish church for fourteen years. Mrs. Reel is survived by three sons, J.S. Swafford, M.M. Swafford and B.E. Hale. Joint funeral services for the two victums were held from the residence at 11 o'clock Monday morning. Active pallbearers for Mrs. Hale were Walter Barnes, Jesse Riley, Arnold Miller, Jessie Bramlett, Charles Minnick and John West. Active Pallbearers for Mrs. Reel were Estell Hall, R.L. West, Arthur Hall, Tom Bramlett, Floyd Collins and Utah McFalls. Honorary pallbearers for both were Lee Smith, Ear Browdy, Estell Hall, Marion Denton, Tom Bramlett and Bill Vaughn. After services here the remains of Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Reel were taken to the Smyrna church, where further funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. The Rev.'s T. Perry Brannon, A.B. Newspaper article, unknown paper (Chattanooga area). Four Hurt As Fire Sets Off Gasoline; Four persons were burned, two seriously, yesterday when gasoline, being used for cleaning purposes, exploded in the home of B.E. Hale, 603 Midland drive, in Brainerd. The victims were: Mrs. B.E. Hale, burned face, chest, back and thights. Mrs. Reel, aged grandmother of Mr. Hale, burned face, hands and legs. B.E. Hale and J.A. Anderson burned hands. The gasoline was ignited by a match struck by Mrs. Hale while she was cleaning a room in the apartment over the Hale store. When the fire started, Mrs. Hale attempted to extinguish it with a broom. The blaze was thus scattered, reaching Mrs. Reel, who was stitting in a chair in the room. Being an aged cripple, Mrs. Reel was helpless to avoid the flame. Cries from the women attracted the two men, who were working in the store below. In extinguishing the flames on the clothing of the two , the men burned their hands severely. The victums were taken to the Newell sanitarium in a J. Avery Bryan ambulance. The men were treated and released. Mrs. Hale was found to have been burned over almost 2/3 of her body. Her condition was considered by hospital attaches as very serious last night, that of Mrs. Reel only slightly less so.
