VIRGINIA BEACH - Jane Spires, 91, of the 3100 block of Shore Drive, passed away July 3, 2011. She was born in Smithfield, Va., Dec. 21, 1919 to the late Edward and Helen Moody Cornwell. Jane attended Mary Washington College and retired from federal civil service as a management assistant. She was a longtime member of Park Place Baptist Church, Norfolk, and served tirelessly in its ministries. She was church librarian for more than 50 years and also served as a deacon. She was a member of the Westminster Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a gracious hostess who loved to cook and entertain family and friends. During their retirement years, she and Cecil enjoyed camping and traveled throughout the nation in their camper, making friends along the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil F. Spires. She is survived by stepdaughter, Mary Alice Surface (Larry); stepgranddaughter, Maria McKennan (Justin); stepgreat-granddaughter, Maran; and a host of cousins. The family is especially appreciative of the kind and loving care given Jane by the staff of the Hoy Center at Westminster-Canterbury. The family will receive guests at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, Thursday, July 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Friday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
