Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross War Medal Recipient. He served as a Captain in the 2nd Punjab Cavalry, British India Army. At the Battle of Agra, India, October 11, 1857, when Captain Probyn's squadron charged the rebel infantry, he was separated from his men and surrounded by five or six Sepoys. He defended himself and before his own men had joined him, had cut down two of his assailants. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross War Medal and later achieved the rank of General.
