He began his three-year enlistment in Capt. William McCrackin's Company C. of the 98th Illinois Regiment of Volunteers on Aug 9, 1862. He served until his medical discharge on April 13, 1863, and died of pulmonary tuberculosis 12 days later. He left behind a wife, Mary Jane Wallace, and two sons, one-year-old John Amon Wallace Jr., and four-year-old William Alexander Wallace.
