Columbia: Funeral services for George Burks, Sr., 81, will be held at 11 a. m. Friday, November 10, 2000, at New Heights Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael J. Townsend. Interment will be at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. Visitation will be 5-7 this evening in Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to New Heights Baptist Church, 5501 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29212.
Mr. Burks died Tuesday, November 7, 2000. Born in Atlanta on June 26, 1919, he was the son of the late Charlie S. and Annie H. Burks. He served in the U. S. Navy in the Pacific Campaign during World War II. Mr. Burks was retired from the Southern Railroad after 35 years of service. He was a member of New Heights Baptist Church where he served as deacon and a trustee.
Surviving is his wife, Deane Hobbs Burks, son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Ann Burks of Irmo; sisters, Kathleen Dominy of Charlotte, Betty Lemacks of Florence, Edna Lewis of Alamonte Springs, Fla.; step-children, Wahetha Rish, Roxann Harris, Janelle Steele, Duffy Hobbs; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren. Mr. Burks was predeceased by his first wife, LaVerne S. Burks.
