Julia Duft came from the town of Worms in the Grand Duchy of Hesse (now part of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). She emigrated with her brother, Carl Duft, to America and settled in Baltimore, Md., where she married Jacob Appel soon after their arrival. In 1848 the couple came to Highland, and her husband opened a bakery. According to her obituary, the couple had 3 sons and 5 daughters, including Katharina, Charles, Karoline and Anna Margaretha. Jacob died in 1861. Of all her children, only her son Charles Appel outlived Julia. Her family is likely buried here in Highland Cemetery, which dates to 1833, but city records don't begin until 1866 and only confirm Charles and an unnamed daughter buried here in 1860.

Julia lived for 3 years in Greenville with John Janett (her daughter-in-law's brother) but returned to Highland to spend the rest of her life with her son Charles' family. She died after a prolonged illness from flu. Although the Highland Appels were closely associated with the Evangelical church in Highland, her service was conducted by the local Methodist congregation. In addition to her son, she left behind 6 grandchildren, many of whom settled in the western US. None of her many descendants live in Highland, but her brother Carl Duft also raised a family in the town.
