Arthur John Leavenworth, 83, of Dayton, passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Sayre, Pa., on July 10, 1928, and was a son of the late Arthur J. and Vera Ethelinda (Overpeck) Leavenworth.
Arthur John was a retired superintendent of the U.S. Postal Service. He attended HOME Church. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War.
He was a member of several Masonic lodges: Cherrydale Lodge No. 42, Rockingham Union No. 27, Staunton Lodge No. 13 and Eureka Lodge No. 195, where he served as District Deputy Grand Master during the 2008-09 year.
John was active in the ACCA Shrine and the Valley Shrine Club, where he was currently serving as president. He was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of Hope Chapter No. 73 Order of the Eastern Star, where he was a past Worthy Patron.
He was united in marriage on Oct. 3, 1953, to Wanda Jean (McClellan) Leavenworth, who preceded him in death on April 25, 2008.
Surviving are a daughter, Rhonda Leavenworth Johnson and husband, John, of Bridgewater; granddaughter, Karenell Ada Johnson; two sisters, Ellen Wilson of Wyalusing, Pa., and Janice Palmer of Stoughton, Wis.; and a brother, Donald Leavenworth of Towanda, Pa. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service will be held at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, with Pastor George Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Dayton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at the Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with an Eastern Star service followed by Masonic Rites beginning at 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arthur John Leavenworth Scholarship Fund, c/o Frank Will, Treasurer of Eureka Lodge No. 195, 795 Old Bridgewater Road, Mount Crawford, VA 22841, or Shriners Hospitals for Children, 3551 North Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19140-4131.
