Zulu War Victoria Cross Medal. He served as a Corporal with the Natal Native Contingent, South African Forces. Zululand during Rorke's Drift On the dates of January 22 and 23, 1879, the British garrison at Rorke's Drift, Zululand, Africa, was attacked by 4000 Zulu warriors. Corporal Schiess was one of the wounded in the hospital, when he take an active part in the defense. When Zulu warriors mounted continued efforts to enter the inner walls, Corporal Schiess moved barricades to dislodge warriors and fought off there attacks personally killing many warriors. For courage in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in February, 1880. He later died while on a voyage on board the Steam Ship Serapi off Angola in the Atlantic Ocean.
