World War II Victoria Cross Recepient. Born in Houhora, Northland, he was a Flying Officer with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, attached to 200th Squadron, Royal Air Force. On August 11, 1943, Flying Officer Trigg and his crew in their B24 Liberator aircraft were searching for enemy vessels in the Atlantic Ocean, off West Africa. When they spotted a German submarine on the surface, Flying Officer Trigg attacked but the Liberator was badly hit by anti-aircraft fire from the U-boat. Flying Officer Trigg maintained his attack and dropped six depth charges on the submarine. On his final approach before the submarine sank, his plane was hit again and crashed into the Atlantic, killing Flying Officer Trigg and his seven crew members instantly. The U-boat captain was picked up with fellow German survivors the next day. As a result of his story, the Victoria Cross was posthumously awarded to Flying Officer Trigg's widow by the Governor General of New Zealand, Sir C. Newell, on May 28, 1944.
