Spanish-American War Veteran

One of 10 children; emigrated to the U.S. from England about 1887 with his parents. He and all his siblings but 2 were born in England. His youngest sister Florence was the only sibling born in the United States.

Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 14, 1898 at Cleveland, Ohio and deployed to Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War with Battery M, 7th Regiment, US Light Artillery. For additional info on one of his experiences in that war see:

Fredric A Winter (21) married Maud E Brown (18) on Dec. 25, 1900 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. His parents were Samuel W Winter and Emily Brown, and he was born in London, England. Her parents were Homer Brown and Hattie Ammerman, and she was born in Granger, Ohio. His occupation was listed as Artist. The marriage did not last long. They were divorced in 1901-1902 and had no children.

Fredric A Winter (23), born in London, England, married Elizabeth Simpson (19), born in Cumberland, England, on July 12, 1903, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. His parents were Samuel Winter and Emma Brown, and he was a Clerk. Her parents were Hine Simpson and Mary Nilson. Fred and Elizabeth had a son, Nelson Frederick Winter in 1904, and a daughter, Elizabeth (Bessie) Winter in 1907. They were divorced sometime prior to the 1910 US Census.

His bride-to-be was Jessie Campbell Davey (sic - should be Davie) (23), born in Stoctoy on the T. (Stockton-on-Tees?), England on Jan 26, 1888. Her father was John Davey and her mother was Jennie Morley. For some reason the Marriage Certificate portion at the bottom of the application is blank, however. Jessie C. Winters (74) died Jun 22, 1963 in Cleveland. She was divorced.

On Aug. 8, 1913, Fredrick A Winter (28) married Helen F Lewis (18), born Sept. 23, 1894 in Cuyahoga County. He was born in England, and his parents were Samuel Winter and Emily E Brown. She was born in Lakewood, and her parents were John K Lewis and Julia A Foote. Fred listed his occupation as Salesman, and his address as 11922 Franklin Ave. According to the 1900 US Census, Helen was born in September 1894. It is unknown how long they were married. Helen married Edward S Werfield on Nov. 18, 1918.

He was a US Citizen by his father's naturalization, and was a Machinist working in W. Duluth. His nearest relative was his son Nelson F. Winter, who lived at 11922 Franklin Ave, Lakewood, Ohio (with Fred's parents). He was described as Medium in height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair. He was not physically disqualified.

Fred married Cecelia Margaret Fray in 1932. They had one son, Charles Haddon Winter, who was born in 1933 and named after the 19th century British pastor and author Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Fred worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) for many years and also worked as the camp cook at Camp Emerson, the Boy Scout Camp at Idyllwild, Riverside County, California.

Fred and his older brother Charles Henry Winter are each buried on one side of their "baby sister" Florence May Winter.
