Howard R. Bass, 71, of 170 Silver Maple Way, Newport, formerly of Buncombe County, North Carolina, died Sunday, February 28.
Mr. Bass was born February 18, 1928, in Buncombe County, North Carolina, where he had lived for most of his life. He had been a resident of Newport for the past three years.
Howard retired from Steelcase in 1990.
He was the son of the late Hubert and Willie Mae Wallen Bass and was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Bass.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Ava Lou Camby Bass; daughter, Annette Edwards of Weaverville, North Carolina; sons, Kenneth Bass of Asheville, North Carolina, Jerry Bass of Weaverville, North Carolina, and Randy Bass of Burnsville, North Carolina; sisters, Helen Marler of Mars Hill, North Carolina, Iris Banks of Asheville, North Carolina and Marie Bass of Leicester, North Carolina; brothers, Donald Bass of Marion, North Carolina, James Bass of Weaverville, North Carolina, and Jesse, Charles, Ronald and Burnice Bass, all of Barnardsville, North Carolina; seven grandsons; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Independent Baptist Church of Weaverville, North Carolina, with the Reverends Charles English and Bobby Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at West Funeral Home in Weaverville, North Carolina, where the body will remain until placed in the church one hour prior to services. At other times, the family will be at the home of Kenneth Bass, 307 Macedonia Road, Asheville, N.C. 28804.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 31 College Place, Bldg. C., Suite 100, Asheville, N.C. 28801.
West Funeral Home, Weaverville, North Carolina, is in charge.
