Walter G. Stiemke, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011.
He was born on Dec. 20, 1917, in the town of Leeds, the son of Gustav and Annette (Manthe) Stiemke. On April 4, 1940, Walter was united in marriage to Bernice E. Stoltenburg. She preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 2010. Walter loved his family and farm. His passion was farming. He was a very hard working and a wonderful husband and father. He was a big man with a huge heart that was a true inspiration to all.
Walter is survived by his four children, Judy (Steve) Wells, Patricia (Terry) Rowe, Diane (Bill) Wolff and Cindy (Keith) Cottington; daughter-in-law, Sheryl Stiemke; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Ervin (Henrietta) Stiemke; two brothers-in-law, Robert and Wendell (Linda) Stoltenburg and four sisters-in-law, Shirley and Olive Stoltenburg, Margaret Hebel and Donna (Robert) Mountford.
In addition to his wife, Bernice, Walter was preceded in death by a son, Gustave; a brother, Edward (Arlene) Stiemke; a sister, Anna (Ed) Kusrow; four brothers-in-law, Frankie (Frances), William and David Stoltenburg and Don Hebel; and two sisters-in-law, Helen (Arnold) Zellmer and Betty Stoltenburg.
Funeral services will be held at ZION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, on Highway K in South Leeds at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, with the Rev. Scott Schwertfeger presiding. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at the church and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. Burial will be in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery.
